Dear Flames Families,

As we reach the end of another fantastic school year, we want to take a moment to reflect on the many achievements and memorable moments we’ve shared.  This year has been filled with growth, learning, and incredible experiences for our students, staff, and parents.  We have welcomed new families, we have said goodbye to old friends, we have laughed together, learned together, and played together with Flames pride!

A few special shout-outs:

  • Thank you to our AWESOME students.  We want you to know how proud we are of all your accomplishments.  You have worked so hard and showed such resiliency and determination throughout this year.  Flames, you motivated us every day to be better and to embrace each day with joy and hope!

Your engagement in your child’s education and the school community has been invaluable. Your support has played a crucial role in making this year a success, and we appreciate all the ways you have contributed, from volunteering to attending school events, and everything in between. We are truly grateful!
  • Thank you to the staff of OLOL.  Every day you put the needs and the well-being of the students in your care above your own. You coached, you ran clubs, you embraced field trips, and every other thing that made coming to school exciting and engaging. We are incredibly grateful for your tireless efforts and the positive energy you bring to our school every day. Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment!
  • Thank you to the Catholic School Council. Your dedication to this school and the families you represent is unwavering.  We look forward to all the amazing ways we will support this community next year!
  • Lastly a special thank you to our Grade 8 Graduates of 2024! As you take this next big leap please remember that you hold a special place in the hearts of all of us at OLOL.   It has been a pleasure to watch you grow and we wish you success as you begin your journey through secondary school.  May God bless and guide you always!

OLOL Carnival:

Term 2 Report Cards:

Second-term Report Cards and Kindergarten Communication of Learning for the 2023/2024 school year will be sent home on Tuesday, June 25th.  The Ontario Report Card and the Kindergarten Communication of Learning reflect your child’s achievement in all subject areas for term 2 and is not meant to be a summary of the full year. In reviewing student achievement over the course of the school year, you are advised to consider each term independently.  As always, families are encouraged to reach out to their child’s teacher about their progress this school year.

Plans of Care, Medication Pick Up and Lost & Found:

A few reminders for parents and students as we head into the last weeks of the school year.  We have a number of Lost & Found items.  Please ask your child to check to see if they own anything displayed on the lost & found table. Any unclaimed items will be donated over the summer.

Students with Medical Plans of Care:  If your child has a Plan of Care, it was sent home last week for you to review and add any changes.  Please send it back as soon as possible to the office so we can have the plan updated promptly for September.  As always, if any medical information changes let the office know and we will make the adjustments needed to record the most current information.

Medication: If your child has any medication at the office, we ask that a guardian or your child come to the office to pick it up on their last day of school, June 27th   Thank you!

Bus Transportation for 2024-25

Transportation details for the 2024/2025 school year will be available on Monday, August 19, 2024, via the Parent Portal for students in SK-Grade 12. Eligible students are automatically assigned transportation for September on August 19, 2024 using the home address on the students’ school records when registered at school, and therefore you do not need to register them for the bus. *If the address on the student’s record is incorrect, contact the students’ school directly

If you already have a Parent Portal account, you can use the same credentials to login for new transportation details. If you do not have a Parent Portal account, use our guide to create one: See our complete Parent Portal Login Guide here.

Junior Kindergarten (JK) Students:  Transportation eligible JK students’ families will receive an email from Contacts STSWR during the week of August 19th (August 19-23), using the information provided during kindergarten registration. This email will contain your JK child’s transportation details.  Please check your spam/junk folder during the week of August 19-23 if you do not see your JK students transportation information email in your main inbox.  If there is no email on file for your JK student, a letter with the same transportation information will be sent to your home address that same week.  See our complete Parent Portal Login Guide here

Next School Year 2024-25:

Class placements will be sent to families via school messenger on Labour Day weekend.   Placement is a carefully thought out process with each child’s needs carefully considered.  We will not take requests for specific teachers, however we are confident your child will be pleased with their placement and will have a wonderful school year.

*Please note, as enrolment fluctuates, lists could still change all the way up to Thanksgiving in the event the board requires a class readjustment. Which means students may be moved from one classroom to another pending Fall enrollment.

Please continue to check SchoolMessenger throughout the summer for any additional announcements as well.

With that, I would like to wish students, parents & caregivers, and school staff a safe, restful and rewarding summer.  Enjoy the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends and come back to school with a sense of rejuvenation in the fall.

May God bless us all and keep us safe from all harm until we meet again in September.

Respectfully and with gratitude,

Erin Stevens

Dear Flames Families,

In addition to being Pride Month, June is National Indigenous History Month. It is an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. A time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples who have lived on this land and whose presence continues to impact the evolving Canada. At OLOL we are sharing these stories through the morning announcements for students and staff to pause and pay attention throughout the month.

Not a problem! Just listen and follow along with the prompts given in the message.

Early Pickups

We have noticed an uptick in the number of parents calling the office for last-minute pick-up requests or to pass along changes in routine. While we realize that sometimes emergencies happen, we are asking parents to try as much as possible to convey those messages ahead of time.  With over 400  students, the office can be a very busy place and last-minute messages are not always possible to convey.  Thank you for your understanding and patience.

ሰላም! በጃኻ ነዚ ሓበሬታ እዚ ንኽትትርጕሞ ኺሕግዘካ ንፈታዊኻ ሕተቶ የቐንየለይ!

Dear Flames Families,

As we step into the final month of this fantastic school year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we have experienced together. June marks not only the end of the academic year but also a celebration of the hard work, dedication, and growth demonstrated by our students, staff, and the entire school community.  As we enter June, we have a lineup of exciting events and activities to celebrate the accomplishments of our students. These include:

  • Graduation Ceremonies: We will honour our Year 2 Kindergarten and Grade 8 graduates by celebrating their hard work and achievements as they prepare for the next chapter of their educational journey.  Our Grade 8 graduation is on Wednesday, June 19th, and our Year 2 Kindergarten students’ celebration is on Thursday, June 20th.
  • Final Reports: Report cards will be distributed on June 25th.
  • Tournaments and Regional Track and Field Events:  Wednesday, June 5th, our Cross Country team will be participating in their run at Columbia Fields.  June 11th is scheduled for our athletes who have qualified for Regionals in Track & Field.  On Thursday, June 20th, our Intermediate Co-Ed Ultimate Frisbee team will be participating in their day tournament.  Finally, our Junior Boys and Girls 3-Pitch tournaments are scheduled for June 17th.  Good luck to all of our athletes and thank you to all of our coaches!

We encourage all students to stay focused and maintain their enthusiasm for learning throughout this month. Flames, let’s finish the year on a high note, reflecting the dedication you have shown all year long!

THIS IS WHY WE ARE HERE:

During the Month of June:

June’s OCGE focus is on being a Learner for Life.  Students will join together on Friday for a faith celebration to wrap up our schoolwide theme this year.  How fitting that our last focus is on being a learner for life and we hope it doesn’t stop on the last day of school!  Keep learning and exploring through the summer!

By Being a A Self-Directed, Responsible, Lifelong Learner: I AM A LEARNER FOR LIFE!

  • I use my gifts and talents given to me by God
  • I always do my best
  • I build on my strengths and weaknesses
  • I set goals
  • I accept change
  • I am proud of the good things I do
  • I am thankful for the gifts of others

Because I am a learner for life, I can reach for my dreams, by living my life like Jesus.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in cultivating a dynamic and enriching educational experience for your child.

School News:

As a school, we have been reviewing many safety procedures through assemblies, classroom visits and daily announcements.   In April and May we focused on:

Hallway Movement (including):

  • walking in the hallways
  • avoiding hitting, jumping, tapping signage
  • removing hoodies and putting phones/airpods away in backpacks
  • remaining quiet throughout the halls, especially during learning time
  • lining up, walking in orderly(ish) fashion
  • staying in own hallway (as opposed to across the school)

Using School Appropriate Language (including):

  • interacting with each other with the appropriate volume, tone, language and body language; this includes in the classroom, on the yard, on the school bus and at school events/ field trips
  • using please and thank you with one another; using each other’s names etc.
  • eliminating swearing at school (on the yard or on the bus)

In June we will focus on Cell Phone/Electronic Procedures (including):

  • reminding students about keeping phones in backpacks, unless under direct teacher supervision for specific projects, students should not be on their phones while at school
  • should a student need to bring a cell phone it should be turned off during the day and in their school bag (not their pocket) students will always have the option to use the school landline if they ever need to reach a parent/guardian
  • there are times when students may have permission to use their device for research for example, but a chromebook will always be offered as an alternative
  • in general, schools encourage cell phones, headphones & air/earpods to be kept at home; things can happen and we understand if students do not want to bring these things in case they are stolen, lost or wrecked
  • the school is not responsible for student’s personal belongings and/or the replacement of any item

There has been a positive uptake in students following these procedures and we know they are doing their best to earn BLAZING FLAME tickets for our weekly draw.  Keep up the great work FLAMES!
